The Makula Foundation & School in a Can

On may 12th 2009 School in a Can and the Makula Foundation got in touch through Mr. Goossens, financial advisor of the Makula Foundation. The Makula Foundation was in search of a method to build a school in a quick way. School in a Can had just started operations and was looking for a project to support. Demand and supply bumped into each other that night which resulted in a solution for both parties in meeting their needs.
The Makula Foundation was founded on November 29th 2004, and is recognized by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration with an ANBI certificate. (for goverment subsidies) The main objective of the Makula Foundation is:
To support the activities of Makula, located in Kampala, Uganda. The common objective is to improve education for deprived children in Uganda.
About the Makula School
The Makula School in Kampala, Uganda started operations on December 31st 2005. On average, the Makula School has the capacity to educate 375 children, instructed by 23 Ugandan teachers.

The school was built in 2005 on a rented piece of land. In 2008, the landlord sold the land to his two sons, and after a long proces of negotiating, the rental contract was extended for another year. To realize this the total of the rental amount had to be booked to the account of the new owners. On top of that the rent went up 23%. The Makula Foundation was forced to accept this.
Necessary things have been dealt with according to demands of the Inspector of education. However, when Mr R. Mutebi (head of Makula School) made efforts to harden the floor of the school in some areas, the land owners called off the rental contract. They booked back the rental amount and gave Makula two weeks time to leave the location.
After a three day search Mr Mutebi found a new location for the school to start in 2009. With help from teachers, children and the Makula team, the school moved to this new location. The Makula School had been saved for another year.
In the movie below you can see the children from the Makula School perform a musical piece.
